MOMA

The MOMA was another place visited on my New York trip. I found this museum a little too contemporary for me and some things in there baffled me a little! Especially as some artworks were sadly not explained. I am going to include some of my favourite pieces of work from the museum in this post.

This piece was very visually pleasing. The Woven Chronicle uses electrical wires rolled up like yarn to represent a map of the routes of contract workers, indentured labourers, asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants. The wires are acting as a conduct and a barrier. It shows the idea of us all celebrating our lives whilst others cant because of the barriers created. Sounds could also be heard from this piece to highlight this idea.
The excitement of space travel in the 1960's. This piece shows peoples wonder and fear mixed together for the fact that man and technology were getting so close. (Robert Rauschenberg).
These series of photographs were taken by astronauts and machines in space. I love how it documents the process of humans in contact with the moon. (NASA).
This series of screenprints celebrated feminism and women challenging the public to engage with a 'real woman' instead of just images on a screen or photo. (Valie Export).
The artists inspiration for this was peoples laundry hanging outside their windows. The work is gathered at three points and pinned to the wall. It reminds me of something someone did on my art foundation last year who did fine art. I love the colours in this work. (Sam Gilliam).
Who doesn't love a classic neon light?
This Andy Warhol Marilyn Monroe piece is probably one of my favourites, and not just because i'm obsessed with her! I love the minimalistic but glamorous feel with her face being so small but also on top of a gold coloured background. The bright colours on the face wouldn't typically go with a brassy gold colour but this just works. This was made just after the actress committed suicide in August 1962.

I hope you enjoyed my small photo series on what I liked at the MOMA.

DOVER STREET MARKET- NEW YORK

Dover street market was a last minute decision for us to go to but I am so glad we did! We were lucky enough to catch the re-launch and so got to see all of the new visual merchandising and new garments and collections out. It was lovely to browse around and was definitely worth a blog post! However it was slightly upsetting watching everyone around us going crazy buying things I could pay my student loan off with haha. I am going to show you a little photo series of what I captured whilst browsing. Personal favourites of mine were the Gucci interiors, the fact that Supreme related well to my trend in some aspects with the tartan shirts and skateboarder vibes. Other favourites were the skateboard interior wall (perfect for the tough 90's trend) and the Balenciaga pink and white striped bag. The shoes and Comme Des Garcons also really made me sad as I couldn't buy anything!

FIT- BLACK FASHION DESIGNERS

During our trip to New York we managed to visit the FIT to see the latest exhibition 'Black Fashion Designers'. Overall, I really enjoyed this exhibition. Not only was in interesting, it also showed me some topics and garments relating well to my tough 90's trend for my summative brief which was really helpful. The only thing I disliked about this exhibition is that it was a little on the small side. I am going to talk about my favourite garments and ideas from the exhibition.

The mismatched buttons in these garments are supposed to be symbols of love of women, fashion and heritage. (Patrick Kelly).
The design of the central garment above is supposed to give a clever illusion that the suit is being suspended by pins from the body even through it is an attached piece underneath. I did think this piece was slightly odd. (Byron Lars).
I particularly liked the 'evening-wear' section as it was very glamorous and feminine. In the 19th century, black designers were said to have made luxurious, expensive evening-wear for only very elite women, this tradition is still continued today with garments being made for people like the late Princess Diana and very popular Beyonce.
Very traditional tribal prints.
Cross Colours ensemble 1990-1994 (prime time for my tough 90's trend). Cross colours were inspired by baggy, oversized styles worn by rappers and adolescents in the city of New York. Oversizing is a massive part of my trend as well as the prints and slogans added too. Cross colours incorporated slogans into their designs too with 'Educate to Elevate' being one of them. Pyer Moss also helps with my trend. He brings athletic gear and uniforms into luxury sportswear and for his collection he even used inspiration from the 1990's streetwear and Cross colours .
Hip-hop style influences on fashion. The photographs were created by Jamel Shabazz who photographed members of the hip-hop community on the streets of New York during the 1980's and 1990's. This makes it relate very well to my tough 90's trend where hip-hop had a big impact both through fashion and through music.
These garments celebrated activism and protest. A lot of garments in the 90's and now today use controversial text in the clothing. Fashion is a form of communication.
The puffer, quilted jacket and skater-style backpack reminded me of my trend in these garments, however they also contrasted greatly against the random work trousers and office shoes and shirt.

So there was just a few things I picked up on in the FIT. I really enjoyed browsing around and if I ever get a chance to go to New York again I will 100% be going back there to check out their future exhibitions.

NEW YORK DAY 6

This was our last day so we wanted to try and make the most out of it, we definitely didn't want to leave! We had to get the coach back to the airport at half two so it gave us the morning to explore New York just a little bit more. We firstly visited Dover street market, we were very lucky because they had just opened up for their re-launch and there was a big queue of people outside ready to grab the latest fashion! I absolutely loved the interior in there and will be doing a separate blog post all about Dover street market in depth. One of my favourite sections was the Gucci part, heres a sneak preview of what it looked like:
After we had finished browsing and lusting over the items in Dover street market we decided to go and visit the high-line as we heard the views from there were supposed to be amazing!
We unfortunately ran out of time and had to get back on the coach to the airport after the high-line. I had the most amazing time in New York and hope to go back soon! I hope you haven't enjoyed looking through my photos taken in my little New York series. Travel blogs are my favourite to write so i hope I have many more to show you in the near future.

NEW YORK DAY 5

Day five was a very organised, planned ahead day for us. We got up early to catch the staten island ferry to go past the Statue of Liberty. I have to admit, this was a little bit disappointing as such a famous, highly spoken about building. We made the decision not to go on the actual island but I still thought it looked quite small, however saying that it was definitely nice to see and it had been ticked off of my bucket list.

After getting off the ferry we decided to go and visit the 9/11 memorial as it was close by and was something we all wanted to do. Although I knew what to expect it still shocks you when you see just how high all of the buildings around are and how closely together they are around wall street. The memorial created with the fountain was beautiful and I thought it was lovely how they lay a rose on the persons name when it is their birthday.
I wanted to visit the little church close by that survived the 9/11 attacks as I had heard they have a memorable memorial there that is just as upsetting as the fountains itself. I was disappointed when I found out there had been a renovation in the summer of 2016 and I didn't quite understand why they would have emptied the church out. Im guessing this is what the museum is for next to the fountains. This was a beautiful building next to another stunning one called Oculus which was bizarrely a mall randomly situated in the middle of it all!
We also visited the MOMA later on in the day which I am going to do a separate blog post on. I found it slightly bizarre in there but there was some pieces I really liked such as this sneak preview of an Andy Warhol piece of Marilyn Monroe.

At the end of the day we had a Broadway show booked to go and see Chicago, this was yet another amazing experience. They were very theatrical and over the to which I loved! Mel B played the main role which was nice to see- she is an amazing actor as well as singer! (although her Northern accent did slip out on the odd occasion!).
