During our trip to New York we managed to visit the FIT to see the latest exhibition 'Black Fashion Designers'. Overall, I really enjoyed this exhibition. Not only was in interesting, it also showed me some topics and garments relating well to my tough 90's trend for my summative brief which was really helpful. The only thing I disliked about this exhibition is that it was a little on the small side. I am going to talk about my favourite garments and ideas from the exhibition.
The mismatched buttons in these garments are supposed to be symbols of love of women, fashion and heritage. (Patrick Kelly).
The design of the central garment above is supposed to give a clever illusion that the suit is being suspended by pins from the body even through it is an attached piece underneath. I did think this piece was slightly odd. (Byron Lars).
I particularly liked the 'evening-wear' section as it was very glamorous and feminine. In the 19th century, black designers were said to have made luxurious, expensive evening-wear for only very elite women, this tradition is still continued today with garments being made for people like the late Princess Diana and very popular Beyonce.
Very traditional tribal prints.
Cross Colours ensemble 1990-1994 (prime time for my tough 90's trend). Cross colours were inspired by baggy, oversized styles worn by rappers and adolescents in the city of New York. Oversizing is a massive part of my trend as well as the prints and slogans added too. Cross colours incorporated slogans into their designs too with 'Educate to Elevate' being one of them. Pyer Moss also helps with my trend. He brings athletic gear and uniforms into luxury sportswear and for his collection he even used inspiration from the 1990's streetwear and Cross colours .
Hip-hop style influences on fashion. The photographs were created by Jamel Shabazz who photographed members of the hip-hop community on the streets of New York during the 1980's and 1990's. This makes it relate very well to my tough 90's trend where hip-hop had a big impact both through fashion and through music.
These garments celebrated activism and protest. A lot of garments in the 90's and now today use controversial text in the clothing. Fashion is a form of communication.
The puffer, quilted jacket and skater-style backpack reminded me of my trend in these garments, however they also contrasted greatly against the random work trousers and office shoes and shirt.
So there was just a few things I picked up on in the FIT. I really enjoyed browsing around and if I ever get a chance to go to New York again I will 100% be going back there to check out their future exhibitions.
Thankyou for reading,
Love from Georgia
